Hi Badlanding:
Somethime in the 1950's Paul S.Leaman did a study of the Fabric samples from Fok.DR,I 144/17 which at the time were in the collection of the Imperial War Museum in Lambeth, district of London.
Paul had sent copies of his study of these samples and had stated the colors were dark Olive brown, 4F7 dark areas, 4E5 olive brown for intermediate areas and 3D8 for light areas. The under surfaces were turquoise 24A3.
This is not someone imagination as to what he thinks the colors might be, it was a study done by an accredited engineer, who knows and understands color. The basis of this color is deep yellow, (cadium yellow) which has been influenced by black, the technical description of the color is browns in this case olive browns. The color has a green cast to it, the lighter the color,i.e., 3D8 is a greenish yellow olive, the 4E8 is a dark greenish brown and 4F8 is a very dark olive, slight greenish cast brown.
Blue skies Badlanding,

Hi David,
Iron oxide or ferric oxide or the more common name is rust, it is defined as 6E8 is a orange-brown in the Methuen Handbook of Colour. Rust, is related to rudh is the Sanskrit for red. Iron Oxide is the oxidation of iron, it is also related to yellow ochre, 5C7 and oxide red, 8E8.
1916 P.C.10 was 4F6 which is a very dark greenish brown, the mixing of yellow ochre and carbon black. The 1917 P.C.10 is 5F6, is the mixing of iron oxide, umber with carbon black produces a chocolate brown. The S.E.5 and S.E.5a machines were painted this color. Umber is a very dark brown pigment.
The three primary colors are red, yellow and blue. The secondary colors are orange, green and violet, is the result of mixing adjacent colors, red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue make green and yellow and red make orange.
The opposite colors are: red and green; yellow and violet; orange and blue.
Brown is a description of a color that has been influenced by another color, generally an opposite color, such as red and green which are opposite colors when mixed produce a brown. Brown can be made by mixing any pair of opposite colors. The dominant color red or green will influence the color of brown, red if dominant will a reddish brown. Or if the green is the domnant color will tend toward a greenish brown or and olive color.
Blue skies David,
Dan-San
