Ik zag dat de Blitzkrieg groepsbouw een betrekkelijk korte periode duurt. Nu ben ik niet echt van de vliegtuigen, maar ik begin een beetje te dippen van de tanks en pantsers. Dus wil ik na de vakanie eens aan de vliegtuigen. Nu wil het toeval dat ik een boek gevonden heb getiteld: " Pure luck, the authorised biography of Sir Thomas Sopwith, 1889 - 1989"
Sopwith? Van de Sopwith Camel? Inderdaad.
Maar dat niet alleen. Ik heb een voorlopig lijstje gemaakt van de vliegtuigen war Sir Thomas Sopwith zoal mee te maken gehad heeft.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog ging Sopwith failliet door het belastingsysteem in Engeland, maar kwam terug. Dit keer niet onder zijn eigen naam, mar onder die van zijn chef ingenieur en testpiloot, Hawker. Vandaar Hawker Aircraft. De volgende lijst is volgens Wikipedia niet compleet:

Argosy - originated as the Armstrong Whitworth Argosy. Built by Hawker Siddeley during the early 1960s. The last Argosy was built in 1965.
Buccaneer - originated as the Blackburn Buccaneer. Hawker Siddeley built the Buccaneer for the Royal Navy, plus the South African Air Force during the 1960s, also a number of S Mk.2B aircraft for the Royal Air Force.
Comet 4 - originated as the De Havilland Comet airliner. The Comet 4 was still being built by Hawker Siddeley in the early 1960s. The final Comet 4 rolled off the production line in 1964.
Dove - originated as the De Havilland Dove. Hawker Siddeley built the Dove during the 1960s. The last Dove was rolled off the production line in 1967.
Gnat - originated as the Folland Gnat. Hawker Siddeley built a number Gnats during the early 1960s, for the Finnish Air Force, Indian Air Force and the RAF.

Ik denk dat dit een aardig thema voor een groepsbouw en een eerbetoon aan een van de grootste, maar ook meest bescheiden vliegtuigontwerpers uit de geschiedenis kan worden.
Mocht er belangstelling voor zijn, dan is mijn idee om zo in september te beginnen en op de 112de verjaardag van Thomas Sopwith, 18 januari 2010, te eindigen.
