Two weeks ago someone asked about the missile rails of the F-104 Starfighter. Today I checked it on the F-104 we've got here in our lab (D-8114 of the Royal Netherlands Air Force). It has markings on the wing how far the tip tank and the missile rail should go over the wingtip. I measured:
missile rails:
- 12 cm (4.7") at the leading edge
- 12.5 cm (4.9") at the trailing edge
tip tank:
- 17 cm (6.7") at the leading edge (1 cm from the LE flap)
- 14.5 cm (5.7") at the trailing edge (1-2 cm from the TE flap)
The measurements were done perpendicular to the wing tip, and not along the leading or trailing edge of the wing.
